Rcaf cprc-510
Hi,
Does anyone know why the RCAF used the CPRC-510? I have just acquired a -510, manufactured in 1956. The dataplate states Royal Canadian Air Force, Receiver-Transmitter, RT-5010/PRC510, Serial No. 275. This is a low serial number leading me to think this was a number series for RCAF radios. This is a VHF set not a UHF set. So, what was its allocated usage? Thanks in advance. Ian VA6SSV |

Ground or ramp control perhaps?

I would also suspect ground communications of some form at an RCAF Station.
The process probably has not changed that much over the years since 1956, so that begs the question: How are ground communications supported at today's RCAF Bases? Ramp, Military Police etc. Is the Control for all this ground communication integrated with air traffic in the tower or a separate facility? David |

As well I suspect ground & support vehicles but also portable use as with security.
Interesting comment on replacing the CPRC510 in the RCAF: http://www.c-and-e-museum.org/Pinetr...therm1-50.html At the very bottom, under Part VI, Nuclear Defence; Projects. |

Thanks for the replies.
I had not thought of ground forces protecting airfields. This would account for the VHF usage and not UHF. When the set arrives, I will post a photo of the dataplate. Ian |

surplus CF radios
Bruce,
I read the notes and the comment on replacing the -510 sets. Do you know if DND sold of these and other obsolete equipment in Europe or send them back to Canada for disposal? Ian ps I still have to check on those reports regarding the testing of the WS31 sets in the 1950's |

Sorry, I don't know how material was disposed of in Europe. I suspect it might have been returned to Canada with other equipment as the bases in Germany were closed. I've not seen much surplus Canuck stuff over here other than 19 sets.
