I was sorting out some books recently, and came across a 1960 book entitled "Snowy Saga", about the Snowy Mountains Scheme, a huge hydro-electricity engineering scheme known to all Aussies. The book covers many aspects of the Scheme, including the movement of whole towns from valleys about to be flooded forever.

This is a rare book, according to the Berkelouw Rare Books Department.

Attached are several piccies from the book; one of a Blitz, one of possibly a Foden?, one of a Thornycroft Antar transporter, and another of much older form of haulage.

The Antars hauled their loads from Sydney. There is a good reference to these Antars at:

Great photos, thanks for sharing them.
The 3rd photo the lorry is actually a Leyland. It does not appear to be an eight wheeler, the image is not clear but I think it might be a six wheeler which could mean it is a Hippo.

Hi Bruce,
Read quite a bit on the building of the Snowy myself this last year. Fascinating subject for many reasons. You certainly struck gold with that great pic of the Antar, nothing I read showed them at all. The only pic I have is a photo of a photo.

Bruce, just read your link, very dissapointing to learn the fate of the Snowy Antars. This link: http://www.mapleleafup.net/forums/showthread.php?t=9892 Shows one at Cooma in 2007, I had assumed it was from the Snowy Scheme. Does anyone know it's history? Is it the only one in Australia?

Hi Rich,
That one at the Cooma rally had recently arrived for England, it is an ex-army tank transporter, still has the UK rego plate on it. I have a feeling it was bought for a museum in the area.

just did a quick search and found the Antar shown in an episode of "Collectors" :http://www.abc.net.au/tv/collectors/...s/s3300321.htm
According to the program the Antar is the last of the three Snowy ones?? This does not tally with the Military Bridging plate or the rego as you have pointed out. I note that the owner never actually says that it was an original, so maybe the program has drawn it's own conclusions.
Interesting 3 minutes of video.
Would love to spend a day in that paddock.
