LP ID plates
I mentioned in a previous thread that I had a tool manufactured to cast the ID plates. The first 2 have been cast and they are I believe good replicas. I will post a photo of the original from Ford in Sydney with 1942 stamped onto it and the replicas. I hope to sell a few in order to pay for the tooling. These are done in cast iron but I can get them done in brass or any other metal at a later date.

ID plates
I was going to get the plates made with the year on them but when I saw the original with the year ground off and the date stamped onto it I thought this would give more people the oportunity to use this reproduction without straying too far from the original. The original plate from my carrier has had an "A" stamped next to the LP2, so with a set of stamps you can make quite a number of options. Here is a photo of the "tool"

ID Plates
Hi guys
Without trying to rain on Grant's Parade and being a purist, caution should be applied on the style of ID Plate used. There were numerous variations depending on the manufacturer with some being mounted on the offside splasher as this one would be with others, and different shape, being mounted on the triangular section above and adjacent to the driver's toolbox. Attached is an image of a blank that was donated to our Society, unknown whether original or reproduction, and this is different again to the Society's 1941 SA Carrier. It is possible that in the later manufacturing era a generic plate was adopted, but knowing Australia's history and interstate rivalry, I doubt it. |

Another One
And here is a 1941 Newport (Vic Rail) one that I believe came from Carrier #636. I don't know where I obtained the image from but thank you to whoever it was.

#636 Recovery

I D Plates
Hello Bob
The plate #636 is mine and it belongs to the carrier you show on the back of the crane truck. I thought it would be impossible to repair the original as it has been poorly welded. This is when I looked into making a new plate. Because of the cost involved I thought it would be better to make something that a number of people could utilise. Not exactly original but very close to what was used during wartime production and better than no plate at all. I believe the plates were at one time mounted on the guards and were the first to suffer damage when colliding with anything. To answer Matt's question, the 2 plates I have made are in cast iron as is my original, but I can get them cast in any metal you like. Apparently the cost of the metal used is not a major consideration. I did't worry about getting them cast in brass as they will be under a number of coats of paint anyway. Grant Fincher |

Dopey Me
Hi Grant
If I had looked at my own Carrier database I would have seen #636 was yours. Too many parties over Christmas and way too much red wine. Bob |

"Red Wine"
No problems Bob. How could you keep up with every carrier in the country and the photos of each one to boot.
What's pleasing is there seem to be more carriers being brought back from their rusty graves. Have a glass of Wolf Blass for me on New Years. Regards Grant Fincher |

ID plates
It has taken some time but I have finaly had 4 brass and 3 cast iron plales made. They are listed in the "for sale" section. I have kept what I need and have offered the others for sale to pay for the tooling.
