Default French Line

G'day there KoO!

Yes, this is in the Simpson Desert and was taken in 1963 during the construction of the French Line, an oil survey shot line in the exploration for oil under the Great Artesian Basin. The Chevrolet CMPs were used to transport the accommodation and workshops for the workmen.
Sometimes the claypans between sand dunes were soft and they tied the CMPs to the dozer using borepipe sections to get them across.
Back in 1998 I went across the Simpson with a group of the original men filming their story.
