Picked up a Mark I Excelsior Welbike the other day here in Austin, Texas based on a lead from Colin Stevens. It supposedly sat inside the seller's home for the past ten years and he never tried to start it. It had been in the home of the person he got it from for an unknown amount of time as well and again, had supposedly never been started.
Spent a few hours checking things out, filled it up with engine oil and the proper 16:1 fuel/oil mixture, then some additional time tightening all the fittings, bolts and fuel lines that were leaking. My guess is someone in the past had disassembled everything to paint it and then reassembled it with everything looking more or less new. Nothing was tight since they never put any fluids back in as it was to live inside and not be used. Have a video clip below my wife shot with a regular digital camera. Bike smokes a bit and obviously has a few things I need to still adjust. The camera had a fixed focus but caught the run OK along with her running commentary if you have sound . I get no respect ![]() Might take a minute or two for your computer to buffer the video before it starts as it is 13MB total lenght. Course this is if you have a high speed connection. If you are on dial-up, it might take a few hours to start. Welbike Video |

Really good. I never knew that thing could go so fast. It reminds me of these new mini motorcycles the local morons have. Of course yours is total cool.

that's a great looking welbike. i wouldn't worry about a little smoke coming from a 2 cycle engine, i've had numerous dirt bikes over the years, and they all smoked. if i were you i'd try and locate some spare crank seals for that excelsior engine. with the two stroke cycle, the crank case plays a vital role in the whole process. the seals tend to dry up and crack with age which allows the intake to escape rather than to travel up the transfer ports to the top end. bad seals also allows for unfiltered, outside air to be sucked in during the up stroke which can lead to all kinds of problems. one other thing, use only quality two stroke oil.....this might sound nuts, but if the oil smells like ammonia.....don't buy it.
great bike!! mike |

Plan is to completely go through the engine later in the year when its cooler since the bike makes a good indoor project for the winter. It seems to run pretty well as is but would hate to keep playing with it and find out I've done damage to a hard to replace part.
I would have dressed up in my wools and Denison for the video but it was 105F down here that day. Just not that dedicated I guess. Figure I have the airborne jeep to get me around at events until then. |

Dear Gentlemen,
I am an American working with the Moscow, Russia museum of the allies and lend lease. We have a welbike but need engine parts. Can anyone suggest where we can get parts for the Villiers engine? I would be willing to pay someone to put together a package for us. Carl Watt GPA 8809 |

Check the website I have linked below. I have not used this company for anything but had found their site last year and they would be the first place I would contact if I needed parts.
