Well Hello MLU-ers,

In keeping with all the current attention regards the planning of a visit to Australia, I thought it would be a good idea and good fun to start a thread for ASL tutoring ...

Aussie as a Second Language tutoring for us Non-Aussie MLU-ers

Master Tim Tams Tony's thread about the Willys/Willies Jeep got me going on this idea

Here's a starting point for you, Carman.

Here's a sentence which the section below might help you to understand:

"Jif's a bonzer bloke, but you wouldn't want to blue with him; he's the boss cocky."

Here are a few from the "B" section:

"beyond the black stump. Back o' beyond. See above.

bickie, also bikkie. Biscuit.

big bickies. A lot of money. Also see motza on the M page.

biggie. Anything big or bigger than usual. This comes about as a result of a penchant to add -ie or -y to certain words in colloquial speech. Hence, footie or footy for football.

big smoke. The city.

billabong. A waterhole.

billy. Container for boiling tea.

bit o' all right. Bit o' understatement here, matey. The phrase actually means something or someone which, or who, is more than all right: lovely, eliciting admiration, beautiful even.

bizzo. Also bizo. Business.

bloke. Man.

bludger. Lazy person, usually applied to one who lives on the dole and who doesn't try finding work.

blue. A row, quarrel, fight, as in We had a blue.

Bluey. Nickname for a redhead. How about that?

bluey. Swag. (See swag on the S page.) Also blue heeler, a breed of dog.

bob's your uncle. Surprisingly this statement can have one of two diffferent, almost opposite, meanings: in expressing agreement, meaning right you are, or in response to a statement proving nothing as an expression of doubt.

bonzer. Excellent, attractive, really great.

boss cocky. The big boss. Usually used for farmer who employs workers."

And there'a another site which explains our swearwords and terms of abuse, most of which are far to unruly to post on this delicate site:

"bugger me! = I'm surprised (ns)

bugger me, dead! = I'm very surprised (ns)

to bugger off = to leave (ns)

bugger off! = leave! leave me alone! (ns)

to bugger up = to damage, ruin (ns)

I'm buggered = I'm tired (ns)"

Some of the dictionary on the second link is pretty explicit now I've had a chance to read it. Mostly fairly current though but I wouldn't expect you'll hear all of them, certainly hope not.

Strange ... here a "fanny' is a bottom/bum/heinie.
That's not what it is there ...

Flashback to being a young teenager living with my English (Bristol born?) foster family and the first times I heard them use two expressions that totally shocked me coming out of such nice and very proper people ...

"Keep your pecker up"

"I'll come knock you up in the morning"

I knew what those references meant HERE but not what they meant THERE I'll never forget that!

put the name in your search engine and it should come up
kev has a way with words you wouldnt believe!
he has a listing for aust /slang/language.
sorry that book link didnt work,i took it of the home page.
i tried it as well after posting it here and found the same as you ,but it works of my favorites listing??.

Max, no need to worry as [that word] has just been explained to me by Keefy and you don't need to explain in public and so fear fearsome and swift censorship by boss cocky. And besides, whatever Admin powers he inflicts, I can uninflict with mine if I want to .

Mind you, I can't unban myself without Admin powers if he bans me, now can I, so I'd best not be too cocky with the boss cocky Then again, I could ban him if HE gets too cocky and HE won't be able to unban himself with admin powers. Right?

Uh oh ,,,, I think boss cocky may wake up soon and see what I said ... so... I take it back. I'll be good.
