But I suppose if you frequent this forum you already knew that.
It's coming up on midnight here in the Netherlands where my father and I have been participating in this week's celebrations. It has been a long and exciting day for me. My Father was a trooper in the 1st Canadian Armoured Carrier Regt. "kangaroos". It has taken me a 25 year search to finally come in contact with a past and heritage that my Father had difficulty talking about . A past that has nearly been forgotten and I had much difficulty retrieving from our public libraries and archives. Today, my Father and I along with former kangaroos Art Bell and Ed Sawchuk travelled to Dutch town of Mill where the only memorial to their regiment exists today. I touched the metal he touched. We had a moment I will always remember. It was great to see the three old men and one old tank together... probably for the last time. I just wanted to publicly thank Geoff and Hanno for their efforts and help making this trip a reality. Geoff for introducing me to my fathers military history, helping me understand it and giving me the appreciation of all of our veteran's efforts. Hanno, for his superhuman efforts in co-ordinating a trip which saw him crisscross the Netherlands all day. It really was an above and beyond effort. Thanks again. No words will ever be enough. |
