Default legality/insurance w UC on the road

So we're at the point of considering driving our UC and we're concerned about the legality of having it on the road. A friend is a OPP officer and is going to look into the legal end but I'm wondering if anyone here has any knowledge. We're in Ontario Canada. 2nd thing, what about insurance? How are UCs insured? "Our" UC is actually owned by our local Legion so I'm assuming that they'll need to be the policy holder. Any idea on cost for very periodic (parade type) driving? Finally, what's the word on driving them on paved roads. My hunch is that as the tracks aren't really the skid-steer type and relatively smooth they'll be fine but if we can say "oh, *** community allows it" I know our municipality will find it easier to ok us on the road.

Do some searches on the whole forum about insurance. There have been many "ideas" put forth about getting insurance but in the end it is really driver be aware as no company in Ontario wants to touch these vehicles. The other problem is that the MTO has no proper catergory for the UC. Therefore you can't get a license. This means no insurance and because you can't get insurance you can't get a license. Telling your insurance company it is a farm tractor will get you covered but when they get the collision report from the police and see that it really isn't a tractor, guess what? They pull the policy and leave you hanging because you did lie.

Mine has only ever been on the roads for parades. I make sure that I take all reasonable precautions (have a crew commander) and that the vehicle is well maintained. I also don't give rides unless I really know the people. I did look at getting a personal liability plan for myself but it wasn't foolproof. A friend's familiy has an insurance company and he looked into it and basically said just be careful.

I spoke one time with a fellow who owns a carrier. I may have the story a little misqued here but here goes...

Apparently, there is a loophole for carrier owners but it comes down to a bunch of research as well as the willingness to fork out the bucks.

Many companies do what they call "self insurance". In essence, they post a type of bond or security to an insurance company I believe to buy a liability policy. Think about construction and trucking companies; surely they don't buy individual policies for each and every piece of equipment they own. It would be prohibitive to running a business so they buy a blanket policy to cover all. These same businesses run tracked or self propelled vehicles on the road daily, eg front end loaders, graders, bulldozers etc. They are not licensed but they are insured.

I think this would require a whole lot of investigation to ensure proper legalities and insurance issues. Up until now, mv owners have been very very lucky.

Default driving - carefully

Hi,
so long as you drive carefully, unlike the chap in this video:
http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=rpUassQDmUk

You should be able to get reasonable insurance.
