Anyone know if the cab 12 alligator hood was equipped with some sort of support or catch to keep it open? I don't see any evidence or remains of such a device on my truck.
It's a heavy beast to hold open and I'm not too happy propping it open with a piece of wood! That Ford engine is hard enough to work on as it is. OK, you can slide it off the hinge rods but it needs two guys to get it back on again! |

Was the hood prop listed in the parts manual...??? or was it invented by a practical 3 finger mechanic...?
I got two cab 12 and they don't have props...... .....I mean I have yet to see a hood prop....... althought it does make sense....... Guess I will have to crawl in the snow again to go see if my eyes have failed me or my failing memory...... Brrrrr!!!! Bob

I've looked in all the logical places of the Chevy 3 ton parts book for hood prop and have not found anything. I've look in the Ford FAT parts book in the hood section and don't see anything that could be interpreted as be a hood prop or hood support.
Both books show both the 1st and 2nd cab which I believe means 11&12 as 1st and 13 as the 2nd. I don’t think this was a field modification on the Chevy as all the ones I have seen are identical.

The easiest way to service a number 12 cabbed truck is to remove the hood completely. Just lift it up and it should slip out of the slides each side of the hood. These are just a piece of rod in a tube for ease of removal.Not too hatrd to put back either, just line it up and push it back.

I beleive they must be original, I have not been able to find the part number or a picture of the support when not in use.

There you go fellas
another point up for chevs On the rare occasion you have to work on the chev motor they provide a support for the hood Then again thinking about it when you have to open the hood on a ford it is usually a bit more major so it is easier to take the hood off completely because you will probably be in there a while ![]() ![]() ![]()

we all know that isnt the case
you must remember the radiator is at the front ! the fords need regular topping up as they boil ![]() Isnt it fun getting a rise ![]() ![]() ![]() I really cant say too much considering i have also got 2 ford cmps and drive ford cars ![]()

Any more pics of the F8 assembly showing inside under the hood - I'd love to see the layout of cab 12 Ford electrical bits and pieces e.g. voltage reg, circuit breaker, horn etc. etc. |

Another couple of questions arising from your assembly picture of the F8: 1) Why a 5 ton bridge disc for an 8cwt? 2) Is that a ground cable that I can see coming forward from behind the wheel to just below the steering box? From where I wonder? 3) Are the headlight blackout discs on the drivers sidecomplete - I mean zero illumination? I've put the one with the small crescent-shaped hole on my truck. |

What about the no # 2 class for the 15cwt trailer and the bridge class "3" for the one ton trailer....???? Wonderful assembly line pictures...... I noticed that the Chev seems to have a notch cut into the front sheet metal reinforcement panel to accept the notched hood prop.... on the 2 Fords on the assembly line the hood prop is only resting behing the sheet metal reinforcement panel and it has no cut notch into it...... Finally.... as we carried out our weekly snow clearing on the canvas Winter garages.... I checked out the two Chev cab 12..... one had evidence of any hood props been installed the other had the holding spring clip but no prop rod nor a bolt hole at the front that would have held a hood prop rod.....???? Max..... from what you said about the Chev only needing some minor adjustments compared to the boiling Fords...... can one assume that the Chev cab 11 was by far much superior because the hood opening is only large enough to check if the engine is still there........?? I volunteered to check the oil level on a C8 from the Plows and Shares museum last Summer..... what an ordeal...... first I had to twist to fit under the steering wheel... and grope around a small hole to find the darn dip stick....... re-inserting the dipstick was even worst...... it needed oil baddly but did not tell them as I feared having to top it off!!!! I have had less trouble undoing a double clip bra with one hand...... Boob Bob

This one says 1940. It must have been the day Ford ran out of axles and started using Chev ones. That one Ford axle looks lonely there.
