Mystery truck
I can't think these days! Does anyone have a suggestion as to which make this truck is, photographed either during or immediate post-war in the bombed-out Canadian CMD (GM Ltd, Southampton plant)? I keep thinking it's a Ford but I am stumped.
Cheers! |

Sure looks like a Ford to me David. About 1940 model. The 5 stud wheels look correct for a Ford.

Ta!
Thanks! A Dodge eh? That might explain those louvres/louvers.
And we have a reader! Do you like the CMP story which is running? Thousands of potential readers are missing out on the history of the development of the CMPs written by Yours Truly, though regrettably very condensed. |

Ford
Either a 1938 - 39 with the Barrell Nose Grill or the 1940 41 with the waterfall Grill If you look on the Gun Tractor Database on this forum and about the fifth entry down is an entry by Tony Smith showing a 1939 Marmon Herrington Gun Tractor here in New Zealand, Although it is a softtop it has the same basic cab and side grill as the photo showing that it is a 1938/9 Ford probably a 3Tonner sorry not a dodge regards kev |

100% Ford
Definately a Ford .. either 40 or 41. It cannot be a 39 as the bonnet shape is distinctive for a 40/41. The 39 has a more curved-rounded bonnet shape that narrows down to meet the rounded cameo grill shape. The 40/41 bonnet is wider towards the front as in Davids pic... Having owned one - it sort of sticks in your head !

Ford?
I have checked my photos for 1940-41 military Fords and they have five grille bars and the hood appears different, plus the front fenders are distinctive here...they differ from the MILITARY Ford ones which may be cut-away in the wheel arch though.

For David Haywood
Here is a photo of a 1939 Ford Panel being used as an ambulance. Note the same civilian mudguards and 3 bar moulding as in your mistery truck shot. In your photo the bonnet appears to be a different colour leading to my belief that the bonnet (hood) and possibly the side panels have been replaced.

Thanks
I confess it SMELLS like a Ford by those front wheels and the front end overall design. Duals at rear suggest civvy version and so I am plumping for a 1940 then. It could be a war-weary truck...you can imagine that it was used around the town as it then was for rubble clearance.
Thanks! |
