You should add a bit of an Australian flavour to your birthday with vegemite on toast and then ralaxe and listen a couple of Aussie poems such as the Man from Snowy River or another good one would be the Man from Iron bark. Happy birthday from Yass.

Happy Birthday from Sunny Queensland. You must still be a "young pup" because it sounds like you are here for a good time not a long time. Enjoy your day and look forward to seeing the progress of your carrier on this forum.

Ask Keefy or Geoff, or Hanno? I dunno. I just know I've seen them and they're great ... on many, many levels, how they're scripted and filmed, and including informational, educational, and personal fun stuff. Lots of laughter and tons of pleasure at knowing some of the characters and the maker of the Videos! It's MLU folks

Seriously Mike, Year of the Carrier is the most recent one I've seen on DVD and is quite wonderful. When you see it you'll be glad to have it in your collection. I loved both Videos.

That Aussie narrator (Keefy) has a wonderful voice/style for this stuff. A natural. Loads pof pleasure and fun.

Enough gushing from Ma Yappy for now ...

Default Gushy

Thanks for the GUSH, Ma Yappy!

They're such fun to make too. I've sent Mike an email regarding how to get hold of 'em.

In March, the next chapter of the saga will take place... Year of the Armoured Car, so it will be a bit different, but rest assured I intend to make it as interesting as possible. If the owners let me I'll take a ride in one of each sort including some very rare ones such as the Australian Rover, Dingo and LP4 as well as some of the better known examples such as the White, Ferret and Saracen.

Hope you can all make the international journey!

Perhaps this would put him in the mood...

"The Band Played Waltzing Matilda"...one of my all time favorites, played by The Pogues...

When I was a young man I carried my pack
And I lived the free life of a rover
From the murrays green basin to the dusty outback
I waltzed my matilda all over
Then in nineteen fifteen my country said son
It’s time to stop rambling ’cause there’s work to be
Done
So they gave me a tin hat and they gave me a gun
And they sent me away to the war
And the band played waltzing matilda
As we sailed away from the quay
And amidst all the tears and the shouts and the
Cheers
We sailed off to gallipoli

How well I remember that terrible day
<when> the blood stained the sand and the water
And how in that hell that they called suvla bay
We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter
Johnny turk he was ready, he primed himself well
He <showered> us with bullets, he rained us with
Shells
And in five minutes flat he’d blown us all to hell
Nearly blew us right back to australia
But the band played waltzing matilda
As we stopped to bury our slain
And we buried ours and the turks buried theirs
Then <it> started all over again

Now those <who were living did their best to survive>
In <that> mad world of blood, death and fire
And for <seven long> weeks I kept myself alive
<while the corpses around me piled higher>
Then a big turkish shell knocked me arse over tit
And when I woke up in my hospital bed
And saw what it had done, <christ> I wished I was
Dead
Never knew there were worse things than dying
<and> no more I’ll go waltzing matilda
<to> the green <bushes so> far and near
For to hump tent and pegs, a man needs two legs
No more waltzing matilda for me

So they collected the cripples, the wounded <and>
Maimed
And they shipped us back home to australia
<the legless, the armless>, the blind <and> insane
Those proud wounded heroes of suvla
And as our ship pulled into circular quay
I looked at the place where <me> legs used to be
And thank christ there was nobody waiting for me
To grieve and to mourn and to pity
And the band played waltzing matilda
As they carried us down the gangway
But nobody cheered, they just stood and stared
<and they> turned all their faces away

And now every april I sit on my porch
And I watch the parade pass before me
<i see> my old comrades, how proudly they march
Reliving <the or their> dreams of past glory
<i see the old men, all twisted and torn>
The forgotten heroes <of> a forgotten war
And the young people ask <me>, what are they
Marching for?
And I ask myself the same question
And the band plays waltzing matilda
And the old men <still> answer to the call
But year after year their numbers get fewer
Some day no one will march there at all

Waltzing matilda, waltzing matilda
Who’ll <go> a-waltzing matilda with me
Haunting tune, sang, amongst others, by Eric Bogle, a Scotsman who migrated to Oz.

I'll admit that I get a bit of eye dampness every time I hear it, and as I read the post.

Not knowing how old you guys are, I'm not sure if you're a contemporary of mine or if you'd remember the airplay that an Australian singer received in the late '50's and early '60's. For the life of me I can't recall his name but I remember some of the songs he sang. Of course, my favourite was "Waltzing Matilda", how the heck else could a Canadian lad learn what a billabong was! He also sang "Tie me Kangaroo down, sport" My mother would get after me as I turned the radio up to listen to those songs.

Derek...
To refresh your memory...
Tra-la-la-la-laaaaaa!!

Rolf wrote this in 1957, inspired by Harry Belafonte's calypsos. The song was number 1 for about four weeks in Australia in 1960; this version was re-recorded in England in 1962. Apparently, the verse marked * caused offence (leading to the song being banned in Singapore), and was removed in later years.

Derek..
Rolf Harris also had his Three legged character act about that same time..
He used to sing that song and cruise around on three legs...Funniest thing I saw til the pigs ate granny..!!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Harris) Ardmore & Beechwood Ltd / EMI (P) 1963
Arr. Johnnie Spence - Produced by George Martin

[Spoken:]
There's an old Australian stockman, lying, dying,
and he gets himself up on one elbow,
and he turns to his mates,
who are gathered 'round him and he says:

Watch me wallabys feed mate.
Watch me wallabys feed.
They're a dangerous breed mate.
So watch me wallabys feed.
Altogether now!

Tie me kangaroo down sport,
tie me kangaroo down.
Tie me kangaroo down sport,
tie me kangaroo down.

Keep me cockatoo cool, Curl,
keep me cockatoo cool.
Don't go acting the fool, Curl,
just keep me cockatoo cool.
Altogether now!

Take me koala back, Jack,
take me koala back.
He lives somewhere out on the track, Mac,
so take me koala back.
Altogether now!

Let me Abos go loose, Lou, *
let me Abos go loose.
They're of no further use, Lou,
so let me Abos go loose.
Altogether now!

Mind me platypus duck, Bill,
mind me platypus duck.
Don't let him go running amok, Bill,
mind me platypus duck.
Altogether now!

Play your digeridoo, Blue,
play your digeridoo.
Keep playing 'til I shoot thro' Blue,
play your digerydoo.
Altogether now!

Tan me hide when I'm dead, Fred,
tan me hide when I'm dead.
So we tanned his hide when he died Clyde,
(Spoken) And that's it hanging on the shed.
Altogether now!

Default Rolf Harris

Good one, Alex

Been a while since I last read the words to tie me kangaroo down...

The most amazing thing is Rolf is still going strong 46 years later having moved to the UK.

His most recent fame was to paint a portrait of the Queen:

Source

No doubt our British members will find Rolf a familiar sight on their TV screens as he hosted an animal hospital show over there for many years too.

Quite the evergreen.

Just done the first fourty year stretch???
You are just getting started,Big Mike..
Glad to see you here on the MLU board..
You have got to make an attempt to join us at CC 5 in June..I know it is a haul but we have some great fun at these gather ups and the Bard of Maces Bay is going to be there..He's as big as you or bigger..
Jeff is doing a roast pig this year I think..It is the highlight of the Carrier-CMP crowd in Canada in June..
Bring your tent and whiskey and dress up in your reinactors gear..
I don't think they will let you bring your guns but we 'll take you any way you want to come..
Her is a pix from last year..Jordan Baker should be there with his carrier I hope this year..
We have a blast..
