Hello,
I have been a member here for awhile but this is my first post. I picked up this item today and am not sure what it is exactly. I was told it was a WWII Sherman tank machine gun sight. I have no idea if that is true or not. There are four layers of glass inside the steel case with one black and one white aiming cross. The only marks on the item are on an inner piece of glass: OUTWARD and DSG. Can anyone please positively identify this thing? |

How about a bulletproof glass for a Fox Armoured Car.
(Maybe Otter too!) |

Methinks Peter is right. It looks to be a vision block for a Fox (Parker gave me one years ago).
BTW, I do have a periscope M6 with graduated reticle, for a Sherman, if someone wants it. Pretty good shape, but I have no idea why I bought it (why do we buy half of what we have??) ![]()

Hi Peter and Geoff,
Thanks for your help. Vehicles are not my thing....more into uniforms and fieldgear so I definately needed some knowledgable help. This may be a stupid question but is there any way to tell the age of this item? I did some quick research and it looks like the Fox was used in WWII and also postwar. Any other information or help is much appreciated! Thanks, Jeff ![]() |

The best way is to contact Bruce Parker. He's got a Fox. That's a nice part you've got!

Jeff,
Your part is circa 1943. There were 1506 Foxes produced and obviously, many more spares. The Fox served in Italy and later NW Europe, and after the war who-knows-where in who-knows-wh's-armies. While it wasn't a consumate success as a military vehicle, it was unique, and there are few left today. As Peter mentioned, Bruce is restoring one, and I'm looking forward to seeing it on the road sometime soon. Geoff Quote:

Just wanted to thank Bruce for his help. He has confirmed this as a drivers view port for the Fox. He also states that this piece will not fit in the Otter.
Bruce was also kind enough to send some pics of the interior of his Fox showing the view port in place and also some spares stowed away. Thanks all for the help. Regards, Jeff ![]() |
