You really have to have a look at Bob's (Mudflap) restoration of his wooden steering wheel over on Bill's CCKW site. What an incredible job! Lots of great ideas.

It never hurts to visit other related sites. We enthusiasts are a resourceful lot. The lesson I hoisted on board from the "tutorial" was that you don't have to be an expert to repair items such as steering wheels. Thanks, Barry.

Barrry,
Excellent work indeed. Brave man to paint it olive drab, most guys restoring a wooden steering wheel paint it in clear lacquer or similar. H.

Hi Barry
Thanks for sharing that link. Really gives you an idea of what can be done if you stop and think about how to do it. Hanno, agree with you about the paint, but how will he get the that 60 years of wear look to the paint? Cheers Phil

Well, I'm mortar fired!
I thought you guys would have been the first to howl down anyone that applied a timber finish to vehicle components that were only ever painted. What next? Troop seats? Cargo box floors? Entire wooden cargo bodies? As somebody once commented when confronted with a lacquered steering wheel on a military vehicle.'It's not a bloody boat!' Stunned of Woodend. ![]()

David,
I think we're in the same page. Of course the wooden parts on army trucks were painted brown / green / tan etc. in WW2, and that's how I like to see it - even though I love the look of wood grain and texture. Clear coated wood just doesn't belong on an army truck. Hanno
