I knew that during the war years, petrol was rationed in the UK, but I didn’t think that extreme measures were used to enforce it . . .

I can give the exact location of that photo. It is Arter Brothers garage at Barham, on the A2 between Canterbury and Dover. They were well known in the motorcycle racing world during the 1950's as amongst other dealerships, they had AJS and Matchless and fielded top riders.

Good picture Mark, the way gas prices were going here a while back this would have been a good deterrent for people filling up and then driving off without paying.

Knowing that garage, and its orientation, the 25pdr is set up to engage the enemy as it comes up the London Road from Dover Docks !

I can recollect as an apprentice going there to remove a gearbox from a scrap 1940's Massey Harris combine harvester, Arters were Massey dealers like the company I worked for at the time.
