I'm having a think about the Loyd carrier chassis that Richard mentioned in another thread. Does anyone have dimensions or patterns for ALL of the steel work on a Loyd? From some of the restoration photos I've seen (Thanks Hanno) it seems that it is the norm that the Loyd body suffers from terminal corrosion following 50+ years in the open!
Does anyone know what vehicles the parts were sourced from? I understand the drive axle is the same as a UC, thus I presume the drive sprockets are UC too. Instument panel... I've seen a photo of a restored one, but they look like they came from another vehicle. The loyd does seem to be a 'parts bin' of a vehicle.

The Loyd is built on an English Ford truck chassis. I do not know which one, but I think 1937. The next catch is what length chassis. I would guess that, as usual, the difficult bits to find are the bits, that are special to the loyd. They have their own special axle at the rear, and a basically standard Ford axle at the front (the Loyd has the front at the opposite end to the truck) The axle is flippedThe Hubs are special, and the Loyd unlike other carriers has brakes at both ends.(cable operated) The body work is panel steel bolted together, which cannot be all that difficult to have folded up. Have a look at Nigel Watsons 1st book, and get yourself to a museum or the like to see one. The track, and sprockets. are the same as the other carriers, although they are longer so you need more track. They are supposed to be the nicest of the carriers to drive. If you can save those wrecks, and you plan to own one, then they are worth saving.
I think the instruments come from the v8 ford pilot (English v8)

Nigel Watsons Carrier book (Vol 1) was recomended in this thread and by others. However before I outlay for the book can anyone confirm that the Loyd is covered in some detail.... I wouldn't want to get it only to find that the Loyd got two pages!

I agree with Richard. The Loyd gets very good coverage in Nigels book. You need it.

Jep, Nigel's book(s) is certainly a must; lots of nice Loyd info...also the odd test vehicles and specials.
Congrats on the purchase of the Loyds....read about it on HMVF. It's well worth coming over the channel....Paul Visser and Dirk Leegwater both have a loyd and live very close to eachother. Alex

Thanks Guys,
I'll take you up on that offer at some point, next year probably as I've used up virtually all of my holiday this year :-) Can anyone answer my question on what radiator was installed in the Loyd. Book ordered from Amazon as a reasonable price.

Best way to know, is get the part number from a parts book. It may be a special, but probably only because of the side plates. You have a long way to go, before you need the radiator!. The fan has been discussed on here before. I think its special, because it pushes?

Yes, but I'll get what I can, when I can, as I suspect finding many of the parts is going to be very difficult.... I'm having sleepless nights over the brake drums

Perhaps my plan is odd... but I am going to strip both wrecks of all parts and take them to the workshop where I will rebuild and store (my Dad is going to cherry pick which assemblies he wants to do and take them back to Birmingham). As the Chassis are quite bad I plan to get some drawings knocked up and have new main rails folded locally, I'll use the bespoke Ford X-members and bespoke Loyd fabricated rear end. Trying to straighten those originals looks virtually impossible, and the rear RHS 1/4 looks to be destroyed by shell fire, there is no rail left at all

You could look for a donor truck. Might be easier to locate than a loyd. Lots of other useable bits come with the truck. Loyd brake drums will turn up. The rest of the carrier rots away first.

Next time try through Nigel Watson himself: http://www.universalcarrierbook.co.uk/ If you ask politely he is more than willing to sign it for you.
Also try to get hold of the following back issues of Wheels & Tracks magazine: Quote:
