This is a two-part question, the first bit applies to people in the greater Melbourne area.
Sandblasting Having recently had some parts blasted for Swiss Chris' F15 I have need of your input as to who you've used and whether you've found them to be good. The guy I used was good but rather on the expensive side as it turned out. Source of supply The second relates to the availability of 3/16" captive nuts. As in any restoration there are some bolts which you either can't coax out of the cab or which shear off so the captive nuts need to be replaced. There are of course many areas where you can get behind with an ordinary nut but some definitely have to be replaced. The 3/16" are the ones used in the cab floor, around the grille, driver's toeplate and dash on a Ford cab. The nuts are square. Thanks ![]()

I have used a local guy here in Williamstown but he charged like a wounded bull and was unreliable.
In desperation I bought myself a large petrol powered high pressure washer with sand injection at 1300 PSI. Works a treat and no dust. If you do it in an area where the sand can dry its even recyclable. Don't forget you need to treat the resultant bare metal straight away with phosphoric acid or similar. Graeme |

The captive nuts are available check the recent thread for sources and whats reasonable http://www.mapleleafup.org/forums/sh...ht=captive+nut If you can not find them in Australia I think some of the sources listed will ship them. Cheers Phil

SPECTRUM Rubber Company in Dunheved, NSW has the nuts. 02 96235333 PM me if you want the part number.... about ??? cents each I think. They do mail order. If you drill out the offending bolt with a slightly undersized drill and use a diamond point cold chisel to cut the remains of the bolt out then you will have a clean enough thread to use over. Easier than changing a captive nut. Hows the FGT going??? Ian

I'll try that although a lot of the caged nuts are fairly fragile and tend to punch the cage through. I've been concentrating on the F15 so no progress on the GT yet. At least it runs and has great brakes. ![]()

Hi Keith, Bolts and hardware are gettting harder to find every day unless you want to use metric. It makes it hard to keep everything at a standard without drilling out and replacing every nut and bolt.. So could l suggest that you should get in touch with the following.
CLASSIC FASTENERS. PO Box 187. Welland SA 5007. Australia. Tel: +61 8 8346 9838 ... www.classicfasteners.com.au They have helped me out to no end with 2&4 BA bolts and nuts for my project and they have a good catalogue that you can download. Rgds Steve |

I know this isn't a lot of help to those of you outside North America due to the cost of postage, but the United States stubbornly refuses to go metric like the rest of the world. As a result SAE/Imperial hardware is still available from US and Canadian suppliers if you are willing to pay the costs. In fact, although Canada is officially metric the SAE fasteners are usually cheaper and more available than metric here.
On a parallel line of reasoning, does anyone have good suppliers for larger sizes of Whitworth fine thread nuts such as used for joining wheel halfs? |

Hi Jeff,
I use my blaster for a bit of a specialized application on stainless steel. The abrasive I use is iron free so it doesn't contaminate the surface. Garfield sands supply a wide range of abrasives. http://www.garfieldsands.com.au/. You are rightly concerned about silicosis and need to take appropriate precautions but you can use all sorts of non sand alternatives like soda, although I have not tried it personally. Graeme |

Thanks Graeme I will look into it.
Keith, I found a mob that make them, I did some research because I need some for when we build a C15A rear body. RAGEEM Fasteners, weld on cage nuts 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8 or 5, 6, 8, & 10mm the cage is slightly different the way it is made but it still has the weld on tags the same length, there is a little picture of them on there web site. http://www.rageem.com.au/Products/Sp...peed_nuts.html $55inc for a box of 100 they make to order so allow 2 days, (02) 9599 3132 I got a stack of them I "borrowed" from the oil refinery when I was working there, I drill a hole in the tag and weld it on through the hole so it looks like a spot weld. I also like the idea of water blasting - I have a Bosch high pressure cleaner but the blasting attachment isn't available here in Australia. I do however have a friend with a Honda petrol powered pressure cleaner so I'll look into getting an attachment for that.
