Default Mack NM

Hey guys!

I'm restoring a MACK NM8 1945. Used by British forces.

I found the number M559512 on the hood.
Can one tell me more about the registration number?

Thanks!

Jeroen

Jeroen,

The prefix letter "M" would only be used on cars, or light utilities. The number actually belongs to a Bedford QL, so there is something wrong there. It may be that the truck was transfered to another countries' army after the war. This happened to a large number of vehicles as the British Army had too many and they were aid for those countries that had been overrun and had nothing. Hence, it may not be a British number.

Thanks for the reply!

The "m" number was under many layers of paint on the hood of the Mack.
It is in white paint and on the original US OD first layer of paint. No US number found....only this one...

Looked at the list of Macks in British WW2 service and none even similar. Is there any data plates on the vehicle with a number starting "SM" or "S/M"? That would narrow your search down, as it would identify the Contract that the truck belonged to.

Jeroen,

This list is a copy of an official British wartime document, it is available from Groucho Publishing in Tilberg, NL. Rob van Meel is the guy.

Here are all the vehicles under that Contract no SM2311

H5813958 to 5814636 Item 13 Tractor 6x6 Medium
H5215518 to 5216041 Item 15 Tractor 6x6 Heavy, Medium
H5476128 to 5477050 Item 15 Tractor 6x6 Medium
H6228812 to 6229067 Item 15 Tractor 6x6 Medium

The Item number should be on the plate with the contract number. Hope this helps.

Richard
