reproduction parts
In a thread about Pattern 13 window bags, Mike Calnan, raised a very interesting issue of original versus reproduction Mike said “To avoid any 'repro' issues, he will stencil 'reproduction' and a modern date inside where it doesn't show.”
I started working on CMP’s in 1978. I’ve gone from one to three vehicles. As time has pasted parts have migrated from one vehicle to another and some new (NOS CMP) parts have been acquired. But you know with some things like seat cushions, lights, carburetors, clutches, etc. I would have a hard time telling you for sure which vehicle they came from originally. This may be of no great importance. Because I am sure in the field parts migrated from one vehicle to another or were scrounged from one source or another. Mike’s idea of marking parts with the date and whether or not they are reproduction or NOS, really make sense. It will help somebody in the future to understand the true history of various vehicles. Currently, I am working on restoring a pattern 12 Cab, which has a lot of rust though it in some ways it would be easier just to fabricate new sheet metal parts. I have decided, to wherever possible, to use the original part and replaced only the rusted out material when it is impossible. I’ve taken to painting the date when the part was fabricated on the bare steel. Just food for thought.
