Default MLVW owners heads up

Just a heads up for you fellas that own MLVW's theres a message out with restrictions on the fleet. Theres apparently a problem with trunnion shafts cracking as well as rivets / bolts breaking or missing in the trunnion plates. PM me and I'll give you a copy of the message.

Default Mlvw

this is the only deuce I've seen that breaks the trunnion so easy , but after looking at the torque rods I know why , torque rods are cheap crap, the CCKW has better ones , like to meet the guy that thought that was a good torque rod,

Default MLVW is a great truck compared to the rest of our fleet....

We are dealing with the issue now at work. They are under restriction- no driving off base, no troops in back and no going over 60km/h. Not that they ever go much faster...LOL. Do you guys have one at the museum?

In my opinion, the loose rivets or missing bolts are things which could be expected of a truck that has been driven hard for the past 33 years. There were inspection parameters for catching these faults way back in the 90s. The MLVW was susceptible to rusting in between the trunnion plates and the frame, which resulted in mat techs having to cut the rivets, remove the plates, inspect the frame thickness, and if OK install newly made plates using bolts to retain them. It falls on the vehicle techs to then check the torque of those bolts during the annual inspections.

To test for loose rivets, you squirt a bit of oil at the back of the rivet head, wipe off the oil, and whack the rivet with a hammer. If the rivet is loose, oil will be seen splashing from around the rivet head. Those rivets were to be removed, the hole reamed to size, and a gr 5 bolt with a suitable length of unthreaded shank should be a slightly snug fit. A locking nut would then be torqued to spec.

We replaced the front spring hanger bolts way back in the late 80s/early 90s, and from my experience, it was not uncommon at all to find the bolts loose.

My privately owned MLVW had some corrosion at those plates, but there is a simple fix. Annually, I'll squirt some oil into the gap and let it seep in between the frame and the plates. Eventually I'll remove them and do the inspection, along with some POR-15 treatment, but in the meantime this will suffice. Mine is not abused nearly as much as those still in service.

As for the trunnions cracking, they were all NDT inspected not that many years ago. Surprising that this has cropped up again.

we no longer want soft skin vehicles that end up on our DA, there is no point to it, we are buying the vehicles on the open market , so we will never have a true MLVW, LSVW, or G-wagon, not the CF version anyway , there are other options for the G-wagon , German Border Police use the same chassis with out the computer crap,

Default Vehicle Disposal

Just noticed that last comment and did a search and didn't find anything, so I'll pose the question are the LSVW's and G-Wagen's not to be released or are they to be released with restrictions? Neither one is on my acquisition list but curious as to why; since the Iltis was released without restriction there shouldn't be any restriction on other domestically produced or non-US sourced soft-skin equipment.

You want to take this one as to why the LSVW won't be released. I recall a posting where your loathing of the Iltis was triumphed by the LSVW.

when the Iltis were coming up for disposal there was a program to remarket them to the public with civy paint job and mag wheels, many were sold as for off road use only, there was also a law suit around that time involving CF vehicles , very big word liability , the same thing happened with the M-151 series vehicles in the US and I believe that case has taken us to where we are now, now we come to the LSVW , no crash test by transport Canada, MLVW with single chamber master cylinder, duals are on the market and many late US M-35 series trucks have these fitted but still the MLVW is a no sale due to transport Canada, now the G-Wagon , no crash testing and they love to roll over , B vehicles are going to scrap very quickly across the country with no real replacement in site,
