Default Ferret Tyres

In Clive Law's photo gallery of Canadian Ferrets there is a vehicle showing the CFR 82535.

If you look closely you will see that the tyres are not the ones normaly seen on Ferrets. Can anyone shed any light as to what make and type these might be please?

Robin

Default Tyres

Robin,

They just seem to be Michelin XL or XCL tires.

They seem to be VERY used trak grips HSRF. I doubt they are Michelins, as Michelin XL tires were only issued to the ilits in '84 and the CF retired the Ferret in '79. It could be the AVGP tire, issued in '76, but it's a larger tire both in OD and rim width, and would be noticed right away.
My 2 cents

Default 82-506

Dan,

Looking closer I believe your correct. Have a peek Robin at the left front tire on 82-506...

What era would the photo of 82-535 have been taken? Late 70's?

Defense Venture Group and Tactical Runflat Systems Announce Acquisition of Military Runflat Technology From Drive Dynamics

CHARLOTTE, NC and DALLAS, TX--(Marketwire - December 17, 2009) - Defense Venture Group and its wholly owned subsidiary Tactical Runflat Systems, Inc. today are pleased to announce the purchase of Drive Dynamics, LLC's runflat tire systems business.

Runflat tire systems have been offered for several years. Their purpose is to enable a vehicle to maintain control and stability after losing air pressure in a tire, allowing drivers the opportunity to delay fixing a flat until they are in a permissive location to accomplish the repair.

Drive Dynamics' unique multi-segmented design and incorporated bead block system allows for fast service with nothing more than common hand tools in just about any environment and exceeds all current military runflat test protocols. This acquisition will provide the support necessary to scale production and meet the rising demand for a qualified solution.

Michael Marquart, Tactical Runflat's General Manager, states, "This proven technology is the best solution available and was used as a benchmark to set the new runflat standard." Drive Dynamics Founder, Bill Gardetto added, "I am excited that Tactical Runflat Systems has come forward with the commitment and resources necessary to field our technology, and I look forward to working with them into the future."

Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher of Los Angeles, CA, with the assistance of Blank Rome of Washington D.C., provided legal counsel to Tactical Runflat Systems. Bruce Baumgartner, with Thompson, Coe, Cousins & Irons, LLP of Dallas, TX, represented the interests of Drive Dynamics, LLC.

About Tactical Runflat Systems

Those look like Michelin XLs - I am told the three-block XL was unique to the Iltis. British Army Land Rovers are usually shod with the 4-block XLs. I'd like to put a set on my '82 ex-BATUS Series III some time.

The AVGP had 3 block, so did the HLVW,LSVW and the Iltis. They are a directional tire. When the ZXL came out, the fleet was set up with them. I just restored a Land Rover 90, and scrapped the 3 block for a set of non directional 4 block. I kept the best 3 block as a spare. I wish you had posted this 6 months ago, as I sent the tires to the dump.
