Default What color paint do I use on my F8?

Am getting close to the time to paint the frame and need to identify the paint I'd going to use for my F8. Have looked around and have identified two: FS 33070, Lusterless Olive Drab and FS 34087, Lusterless Khaki Olive Drab.

Before making the final decision I'd appreciate any feedback or suggestions as to what choice would be the best. If you've others you feel wold be better than either of these two, please let me know. In order to find any new colors they will need to be referenced with their FS number.

Thanks!
Jim

PS Tried to show the colors as thumbnails but failed. Type in Federal Standard Color Chart and you shoud be able to find them.

Jim,

Both paint colours you mention are US paint formulas. But your truck should be painted in a Commonwealth colour known as Khaki Green No.3. Not a huge problem: contact Mike Starmer, and buy the publication which has a sample and mixing instructions for Khaki paint.

Hope this helps,
Hanno

Mike Starmer revised his NW Europe book in March and the KG No.3 shade now reflects samples from the U.K and Canada. His colour chips can be scanned to produce a match.

Mike's books contain a wealth of information for anyone remotely interested in the progression of British and Commonwealth schemes as well as hand-prepared chips for all the major shades.

Default paint

Hi All,

Just a few comments :

Over the years I have picked up a few NOS cab 11/12 parts e.g., cab 11 windscreens wrapped up in the original shipping paper ( from Bill Drew ) and NOS cab 12 headlight shells .

The factory paint finish on these parts was a semi - gloss medium green.. NOT 100% matt or flat in any sense. At a guess , the finish is about 40% gloss / 60% flat .. if that makes any sense .

The NOS Ford cab 12 doors I found had the same semi-gloss khaki green painted straight over the bare metal.. no primer . The inside surfaces of the C8 door panels were bare metal, no paint at all.

Mike

Since most of the 8cwts that made it overseas were in North Africa I tend to think of them in the desert sand colour (yellow) but the G3 khaki was common too. Olive drab wasn't used this early in the war.

Here's a very much abriged version of Starmer's research, as appicable to CMPs:

1940-42: base colour Khaki Green No. 3

1942-44: base colour S.C.C. 2 (a.k.a. brown, khaki brown or service drab)

April 1944–45: S.C.C. 15 Olive Drab (not the same as US Olive Drab)

Middle East practice: approx. October 1941/December 1941 - April 1943: basic colour Light Stone No.61

HTH,
H.
