Default Engine Fitter (Private)

While doing some family history research, I ran across a Great Great Uncle who served in World War One, in the British Army, with the 10 Bttn, Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders. His rank was noted as above in 1917.

As far as I know, this was an Infantry Regiment and this rank description brings to mind someone working with automobile engines. Seems a bit odd on the face of it, but then I started thinking that the word 'engine' had a number of different connotations 100 years ago.

Can anyone shed some light on this rank classification?

David
