Default Coachbuilding Timbers in Queensland Australia

Hello All,

I read some posts by Wayne Henderson and Jack Neville about timbers they used for coachbuilding - timber framed parts of their restorations. Part of these posts mentioned how in times gone by the coachbuilders would utilise timbers that were readily available to them within their local area. This prompted me to dig around on the internet for some Queensland timbers. There used to be a very large forestry industry in my district - the Wide Bay and Burnett area of Queensland.

One result I found was an article that appeared in The Queenslander back in 1924, written by "Silky Oak" under the section 'Forestry'. This must have been a weekend special magazine publication. Anyway, apart from Queensland Timbers for coachbuilding there were also articles for cabinet making and making musical instruments.

Each of the articles make for a very interesting read!

Enjoy the articles. I am now tracking back through other 1924 publications of The Queenslander to find more of "Silky Oak's contributions.

Breaking news: I just found two articles specifically for Queensland Timbers for Motor Bodies:
Timbers for Motor Bodies Part 1 p19 - 13 Sep 1924 - The Queenslander (Brisbane, Qld. : 1866 - 1939) - Trove
Timbers for Motor Bodies Part 2 p19 - 20 Sep 1924 - The Queenslander (Brisbane, Qld. : 1866 - 1939) - Trove

The October 1924 Coachbuilding article was about building the components of wagons and 'lorries".

Kind regards
Lionel
