Default Looking up my bible.......

Hi Philippe.

Brought my old parts books from the barn for the Winter...... it is more comfortable doing the research by the heat of the computer.

I will cut an paste from your original text and make my comments in Italics.

Caution......NONE of the parts you are looking for are military CMP nor MCP.....
and are all related to the enclosed torque tubes ( now called drive shaft

Research based on the 1929- to 51 GM master parts catalog.

HERE WE GO......

I am looking for the front section of the torque tube for my 1939 (1.5 ton) 158-1/2" wheelbase truck... It is about 49" overall. Individual components are:

GM 3654084 shaft, measures 49-3/4"CORRECT....SHAFT, PROPELLER, FRONT, 1939-40 VC,VD,VD,VM,VN, TYPE B 49N 3/4 IN. 10 SPLINE 3654084 WAS WORTH $9.20

GM 599127 Housing, measures 49" 1939 HOUSING ASSEMBLY, PROPELLER SHAFT Lenght 49 in. 599127 $13.00

GM 599126 Housing/Shaft assembly 1939 HOUSING Assem. with shaft........VCVDVMVN length 49 in. 599127 $30.00

After some time searching, I have finally gotten a hold of a used front torque tube assembly but it is a little rough... I have found some information on the replacement parts, but would like to confirm a couple of things...

The end facing fwd (gearbox) has a (bronze) or sometimes steel/bronze bushing GM 600962, 5.438 Bushing-Dowel, front propellerprop. shaft housing.....1934 - 40 All Utilities (exc. VE<VF<VD) Bushing ( 1 1/4 in. ID)--2 inside grooves 600962 $0.85
dowel pin GM 347813,correct 1937-40 Dowel , bushing 5/16 diam. x 3/16 and oil seal GM 3652271. Not sure if it is the correct number... If so, does anyone have a modern cross reference? Not I.... Also, some aftermarket replacement bushings came with a cork gasket which I have not been able to find in the parts breakdown...No cork anything shown in my manual

There is also supposed to be a center (all steel) bushing GM 373607, which was not inside the tube, and wonder if it contributed to the excessive wear on the front section of the shaft and bushing. I imagine it is absolutely necessary?...NO central bushing in my 29-51 Master listing...... HOWEVER.... in my 1940 Preliminary Parts List they do list (not illustrated) listing for Bushing Tube centre all......373607....

It must be a tight fit inside the tube, since there is no dowel pin or set screw to keep the bushing from spinning along with the shaft which may cause another problem...??????

Lastly, there seems to be a special washer fitted to the opposite end of the shaft,Not sure where that is......903207 and 366989 not listed also no 4.444 ....4.440 is transmission gasket ....4.441spacer transmission then jumps to 4.447 cup trans. (which also has a roller bearing GM 903207 and and lock ring GM 366989) used with a bolt tying together the center u-joint... There was only a regular lock washer, and wonder how important this other spacer/washer might be... Believe it can be found on group 4.444. Also looking for the locking rings for the u-joint bearings found on GM 609948 repair kit.no kits listed

Now will tackle the second one.....
