I remember our cooks using these in the late 60's and well into the 70's. A number of oblong metal plates were used in conjunction with the burner. The plates had a rolled edge so they could be clipped together and each plate had a large elliptical hole in the centre. A shallow trench was dug and the burner placed at one end. The plates were then layed across the trench and the cooking pots placed on top. When the burner was lit the flames would shoot the length of the trench, heating the contents of the pots.
