The British 'draw-rings' for the No.15 Sniper Rifle Chest specify what we colonials call spruce, pine or fir. Not hardwood. There are copies of the drawings on the Military Surplus Collector's Forum. Yes, the wood does seem to weather out to look like oak, but it is coniferous and softwood. There is a note on the drawings about the thickness and weight of the felt too.
