Government and Public Responses
It is interesting to gauge the public and government response to well publicized killings and sadly we had a person with mental health issues kill a couple of people and injure about another half-dozen in Quebec City with katana on Halloween. Following this tragic event there was no mass outcry to ban sword ownership in urban areas or new legislation prohibiting a vast array of antique knives and swords accompanied by a plan to buy back all butcher knives. Public perception of the weapon involved drives the government response and sadly few Canadians know anything about firearms, but most own a blade.
