Research is the way to go. There are some good Canadian references that you should try to get.

Dressed to Kill, M. Dorosh. (uniforms and some material on badges and insignia.) Michael also runs the Canuck site and an associated forum.

Distinquishing Patches, C. Law (Formation patches of the Canadian army.)
3.
Canada's Army in World War II. F. Tripp (Canadian army cap badges and sketch history of the units.)
Try Service Publications for the first title.
