More properly, it's called Aiming Rest.

Excerpted from Musketry Regulations, Part II, 1910, with amendments to 31 Oct 1914.

"The firing rest is used in early training in firing exercises, the recruit thus supporting his rifle, whilst the instructor corrects his position without causing him undue fatigue."

Note that the quotation cites "firing rest" but the Regulation itself and the illustration plates cite "Aiming Rest".

Credit due to Stewart Loy for fabricating the triangular support stay for my Rest, also to Clive Law who provided a copy of the Musketry Regulations.
