Default Non-Indigenous Species

Hi Jon
Most of the above were introduced by our first settlers who brought them over from the old country. They were in the form of domestic animals such as dogs, cats and rabbits and farm animals including the pigs. Some of these obviously escaped and became feral. Of course animals such as foxes and hares were brought in by the landed gentry for hunting purposes. However good has also come about. We now have pure strain of camels that are being re-exported from whence they came and we also have the purest, disease free strain of the Spanish ligurian bee that is also being exported to the overseas honey industry.

Even the native animals are a pest. Plague proportions of kangaroos, the same with the "cute and cuddly" koala bear that is actually a nasty tempered vicious animal. Yet try to cull them to reasonable proportions and the loopy overseas animals "lovers" scream and carry on and boycott Australian stuff.

A lot of our destructive flora originated from South Africa, such as Salvation Jane (Patterson's Curse or Riverina Bluebell), sour sobs, Cape Tulip to name but three. Of course the good flora import was the grape vine and in fact Australia now has some of the oldest vineyards in the world and certainly makes the best wine. Forget the French crap, drink Australian.

Bob
