Here are the old and new flaps. I supplied ( from Canadian Tire no less ) the strips of metal to add some mass to the lower edge. I can't afford stainless steel, but aluminium in the correct width and thickness is easily cut to size and sewn into the flap. I suspect that it will be equally corrosion resistant in this application.

To attest to the authenticity of the new flaps, my lovely wife commented after they had been in the car for about 45 seconds "they stink like an old military vehicle" - so they are good enough for me!
