In that case you have not met a Belgian, German or Swiss cop.
"Ze rulez are ze rulez, meinherr Lang!" 
But I agree on the act first and apologise later. That is what I did when I drove my F15A from the UK to Holland. As long as your vehicle is properly insured you will go a long way in court in case someone decides to make a point of it in an effort to become part of legal history.
