Default Something completely non-military

Anyone with experience in Briggs and Stratton small engines?

I've just been given a small ride-on mower with a Briggs IC 5 HP motor in non-running condition.

On removing the spark plug I noticed the electrode had been hammered sideways. It looks like someone has fitted an incorrect plug with a longer reach and this has been clobbered by the inlet valve.

As there's not a lot of compression (and there is spark) I think the inlet valve has been bent.

After fitting a correct plug the only firing I've been able to get is a little pop through the carburettor.

Is this a reasonable diagnosis?

My original ride-on with a 12 hp Briggs has "put a leg out of bed".
