TITLE:
“Sight, Sound, and Smoke: Blast From The Past”

OTTAWA, ON May 15/03 — Roaring cannons belching smoke, setting off car alarms.
That’s what you can expect at the 14th annual “To Stand On Guard For Thee” event in Ottawa on May 23/24.

With boisterous and colourful pageantry, this historical show recreates a diverse time-line of important events through the ages. Seasoned re-enactors from both Canada and the USA bring together a collage of far reaching presentations denoting key points of nation-building confidence.

From Augustus to Armistice, you’ll witness the sights and sounds that earmark the indomitable will of the New World spirit. With over thirty re-enactments, you’ll be in awe as history comes alive right before your very eyes.

And at its new and expanded location, it’s Canada’s largest ever multi-period military and historical re-enactment. There’re plenty of time-traveling ways of coming face-to-face with your heritage. This is a real blast from the past.

> Brush up on your Latin with Roman legionnaires.
> Witness an American Light Artillery crew from the Revolutionary War use the formidable “grasshopper” against the King’s Rangers.
> It’s only three pounds, but it’s a big bang from a British naval gun from the War of 1812.
> Whistle along with the Fife and Drums of the Forsyth Rifles.
> Watch the sparks fly by hammering an anvil alongside 1800’s metal smiths, artisans, and fur-trappers.
> Gaze upon the 1840’s ‘fashion files’ of struggling pioneering women who carve their niche through the hinterlands.
> Experience ‘The Blues’ and ‘The Grays’ of the American Civil War with regiments from the 2nd Michigan and 4th Virginia.
> Tough on tough: WWII Canadian paratroopers battle it out with a fortified German bunker defended by Kampf Gruppe Norden.
> Dig your way through traveling displays from the Canadian War Museum, Canadian Women’s Army Corps, and Veterans of The Great Escape.
> Feel the earth move as a steely parade of military vehicles from WWII to present-day rumble by and kick up dirt.

The free admission show is open to the public.
