Default Sussex Sherman tank moved to Beechwood

The familiar Second World War tank that has stood outside the Museum for more than 30 years has been moved to the National Military Cemetery at Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa.

Goodbye Catherine: The Sherman tank from the Canadian War Museum's GM Courtyard moves to the National Military Cemetery

Ottawa, Ontario, October 7, 2004 - As part of the ongoing preparations for the move from Sussex Drive and Vimy House into the new Canadian War Museum, the familiar tank that has stood outside the CWM for nearly 30 years was moved in October.

The M4A2E8 Sherman tank, nicknamed "Catherine", was moved to the National Military Cemetery at Beechwood, where it will remain outside as a national monument. The nickname "Catherine" was painted on this tank in 1987 to represent the tank "Catherine" from C Squadron, as shown in the famous photo from the Korean War of Canadian tanks crossing the Imjin River.

The National Military Cemetery of the Canadian Forces is maintained by Beechwood cemetery in partnership with the Department of National Defence.
