Earlier flatheads didn't have filters. And when they did, they were only partial flow...maybe 15% of the oil at best. They took oil feed from the gallery, filtered it, and dumped it back into the oil pan.
Carriers were different, as they required the extra cooling of a full flow oil cooler. Mk1 carriers only had the cooler, and mk2 carriers had the cooler as well as the same oil filter system as the Lynx armoured car. It was huge, although on the positive side it allowed more capacity which would also help the cooling.
It is possible to do the modifications to allow full flow (well 95% anyway) oil filtration, but it is best done during an engine teardown as the modification can and will introduce filings directly into the oil gallery.
