He doesn't know that welding is supposed to be hard - he wants to do as you do, so he just does it. Also, he's still in the habit of learning new things. It certainly doesn't hurt to have steady young hands. Maybe he had a good teacher.
On a more serious note, is there a chance you can persuade him to wear leather shoes/boots so hot slag can't land on top of his foot and burn through (plastic) fabric shoes to his foot to ruin his fun. More important for flame cutting, but I've had a few surprises from MIG welding.
