The driver and hull-gunner hatches tend to be a good indication. Cavalier and very early Cromwell/Centaur had two split top-opening hatches.
Very early on, Centaur and Cromwell production moved to one, then two safety hatches (a one-piece hatch that swings out to the side of the upper hull). This means less stowage bins on the side-skirt, as the swing-space has to be left. The same safety hatches are on Comet.
