This is another Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) item used in the time period of the Bombardier Iltis. A two mantle Coleman white gas lamp Model 290A700C. The replacement Coleman glass globe is # 290-043, and it uses mantles #21. As with all COTS Coleman equipment, replacement parts are available at Canadian Tire/Lebaron and your favourite camping store.

This unit is in a Coleman metal carry case and the case is marked 28 SVC BN This uses white gas (Coleman fuel), which is usually in a specially marked green plastic fuel container with an orange tag.

Here is a little known warning about the coleman lantern: When you are preburning the mantle, be very careful not to breath the smoke from it. It will do very strange things to you, and very quickly. I had to shield the lantern from the wind while preburning and got the full effect of it. Within a half hour, I could not sit as I was falling over. Soon after my eyes were tearing up and my body was trembling.....I thought I was letting the pressure get to me. A short time after that I was puking.

On the bright side, it did get me a trip back into camp, an hour breathing oxygen at the MIR, and a night off the field portion of my JLC.
