In my reference "no services next 280km or whatever" refers to there being no towns or gas stations or restaurants (layabouts) etc for 280 km before you hit the next one. Lots of camping and roughing it if you choose though.
When I am heading to the big City, Edmonton, there is a 280KM, a 300KM, a 200KM ,and a 100km before you run into heavy enough population to have small towns and gas stations in abundance, then you only have 500km or so to go.
