I am thinking that perhaps the ECC totals did not include the vehs that had been written off over the years.

I took all the serial numbers for the Cdn 3s listed on Clive's ramtank.ca. This data was what was released to him from the DND database. I pasted the data onto an excel sheet and saved and sorted just the serial numbers.

The total serial numbers I was left with was 568. However, there are gaps in the serial numbers, just as there are in the CFRs. When I subtract the lowest serial number on the spreadsheet (99712) from the highest serial number on the spreadsheet (100307) I get a production of 595. Add one for the lowest number (the base) and you get a match to the 596 number. Same deal if you subtract the lowest CFR (08500) from the highest CFR (09095), add one for the base number, and you get the 596 number again.

Remember that the Cdn3 was built in the US, and by then the M38A1 was declared sub-standard in US service. It is very likely the entire production run over those serials would have been for us. At the same time, the CFR block for the 1/4 tons was kept pure, only Jeeps were in the sequence. My money says that the missing numbers in both the serial chain and the CFR chain represent vehs which had been PCC'd.

I am writing this from a tent in KAF, where I obviously have too much time on my hands after hours.
