Now that's a Rugby football, a football is spherical. The former may be carried during play whereas the latter may not, apparently.

I'm not too well up on this stuff, the school I went to applied both mandatorarily along with cricket; however, having made myself wholly useless at the enforced ball games, one would get placed at the very periphery of the playing field out of harms way.

Now, the lower boundary of the playing fields at Price's School in Fareham (http://www.hants.gov.uk/sop/ although some images are password protected) had a line of well established trees with a dry ditch beyond. It was entirely possible therefore to steadily sneak further and further outfield until obtaining the cover of the trees and the ditch beyond at an opportune moment.

Having taken cover in the ditch with like-minded chums, we'd enjoy several whilst the rest of the class pointlessly chased the ball around the field. Only got caught, and caned, twice in 5 years. Happy days before Senior Service went up to 1/6½ for 20.
