Ron,

I live on the south side of the Great Australian Alps. The 2 of the carriers I've bought home have come from the other side. There are 4 ways to here from over there and only the road through Melbourne is the flatest one. Not that flat either. Over Mt. Hotham there is a steep 33km. climb up through the Victorian snow fields. 269 definate corners in that 33 km. Not the trip with a carrier on behind. We came home with the previous one over Sassafras Gap between Coryyong and Benambra to Omeo. A much more gently solid climb of about 10km with 66km. of gravel. The trip was a slow one of about 7 hours.

This trip I decided to come down the Hume Hwy. via Melbourne. This was a 91/2 hour trip. Total distance home to home was 1136km.

I was a bit overloaded. My 3 axle trailer is rated at 4 tonnes capacity, and weighs 980kg. The tow vehicle is a SSangyong Musso 2.9lt 5 cylinder turbo diesel. I averaged 15mpg for the trip home.

The Musso towed well with a steady 80 to 90km per hour maintained. This was on the flat and down to 60km. on 2 or 3 hills.

The Musso has ABS, Traction Control, ESP and electric brakes on the trailer.

Slow and steady is the way to go. If your slow up hill, go slow down hill.

You need to have a story ready for the Long Arm of the Law, should you be picked up.
Rgards Rick
