7.50x17 Tyres
 

Hello all.

I came across these tyres the other day here in Perth.

Can anyone tell me what military vehicle they would have been used on.

They are 7.50x17.

7.50x17 wheels
 

Vehicles that had 5 studs in the 40's were Maple Leafs, Fords and Dodges.
My guess is that it may have been a vehicle that was used in the Middle East such as 2 to 3 ton truck that may have been used as a gun tractor etc.
Maple Leaf had such a truck but it had more spokes or holes cut in the rim , the picture supplied has 4 .

17inch is an odd size and more likely to be civilian. The AIF had 18inch and the rest were mainly 13, 16 and 20inch.

Ford had mainly 5 slot rims and GMC/Chev 6 slot.

I suspect the rims aren't original. My main interest is in the tyres and whether they are worth grabbing as they are for sale.

As Cliff has mentioned the most common military vehicles had iether 16" or 20" tyres on them .
However 15cwt and 1 ton chevs had 7.50x17 tyres post war.
Also Inters in the sixties and maybe earlier had 7.50x17 on some of their smaller trucks as well.
If they have been subject to years of sunlight at decreased air pressure they will not last long on the road with the constant flexing, however they would be ok for a static display.

17 inch tyres
 

I'm not sure of the other details, but Daimlier scout cars and Marmon Herringtons both wore 17 inch tyres.

Daimler scout cars had 18 inch wheels actually, 7.00-18 tyres fitted. If anyone knows of any NOS tyres this size, please let me know.

Those rims are for a dual wheel setup.

17" tyres
 

The 1939 - 40 1 Ton Ford with 122" wheelbase , sported those chevron directional bar treads in 17" . Normally they were 700.17's . The 1 Ton Chev of that time with 123" w.b. also had 17" wheels . I know as there is a 1939 1 Ton Chev sitting here in my place with original 17" wheels on it .

Olympic made them here .. those pictured look like Olympics to me . The rims pictured seem to be too wide for the tyres as they are bulging to a degree .. doesn't look very safe !

1940 Chevy 1 Tonner sitting on its 17" wheels . The rims have a locking ring , these are visible .

Syria
 

This pic is from a veterans photo album, a ham radio op I had a few contacts with years ago . He was a signaller in the AIF in Syria . This is his mate , beside their 1 Ton Ford wireless van in the Syrian desert , the 17" bar treads clearly visible .
