JATO rocket and unknown piece???
 

See pics of JATO rocket and a beautiful piece of machined exhaust bell ?? The polished piece is marked Part# 600-13058-909 Serial # BAW-LN-55 Feb/64... CF 100/101/T-33??? Any ideas? Sorry the pics of JATO are being returned as to big for the file. Will try again. Cheers Rob

Jet Assisted Take Off (JATO) bottles were, IIRC, harnessed on to various military aircraft particularly in the early '60s.

Their purpose, again, IIRC, was to facilitate STOL (Short Take Off and Landing) before aviation technology allowed such a procedure.

The advent of such aircraft as the Herc and Buffalo (STOL capable) pretty well doomed the JATO application.

The part number for your exhaust piece is challenging. I maintain a set of the old microfiche from the early and late 80s as a reference for obsolete stock numbers. Your number does not show up in the early 80s. However, a check of the LOCAT shows similar stock numbers, and gives the manufacture code of 88308. This code cross refers to Canadair/Bombardier, and one of the similar part numbers refers to the Dash-8. Since this aircraft was purchased in small numbers, it is possible that Canada did not inventory parts for it under NSNs, and instead bought spares using only the Canadair numbers.

Perhaps tommorrow I will dig up my later fiches and see if it shows up there, since the Dash-8 was a somewhat late purchase.

(The date on the piece does not fit in...there were no Dash-8 in 65. Are you sure of that marking, or could it be a 85?)

I've actually seen a JATO demonstration on a Herc; it came in low then fired the JATO unit with an unholy bang and climbed like a rocket. Interesting! :thup:

I've seen a few Hercs take off with JATO assist and one PBY Catalina. The Cat was at a Vancouver airshow in about 1960 and the Hercs were at Moose Jaw. It's an interesting spectacle to watch.

there was a test where a Herc landed on a aircraft carrier and used a rocket system for take off, looked crazy.

Jon you are partly correct.

C130's up to the H models could take the bottles, but from the H model onwards the provision to mount and fire them was deleted.

Also the correct name is RATO, as they are rockets and not jets.

A nice chap at Bristol Aerospace helped me out with my old part numbers. It is a nozzle kit for a Black Brandt Mk3A rocket, NOS.. Cool! Cheers Rob

Wasn't the Black Brant the one they used to fly the Avro Arrow models over the Great Lakes?
