Humber Pig Mk1
1 Attachment(s)
Can anybody shed more light on this particular vehicle 05BK61, Paint etc apparently is original, (Cyprus?)
An original servicing manual has amendments mainly for a "Missile supply" version, although not sure if this applies to this vehicle. The rear is completely empty with no seats etc. totally bare. It is also fitted with a winch. Any takers!!! |
Re: Humber Pig Mk1
Adam,
The best person to answer this in detail is Clive Elliott, who I know is currently on a show. He has records of vehicle numbers, so may be able to pin down details of this Mk1. All I can tell you is that the "missile supply", was the unarmoured truck cab version. |
For those with the keen eye, the rust on tracks next to the Pig is a Universal carrier, it was in exceptionally bad state, the only parts that looked okay was the suspension, tracks and wheels, the Ford V8 had its heads off to the elements for years and every panel was rotted out the drive shafts had been removed (lost?) so it would roll under a pull, not pretty!!
Amongst other stuff on auction at the Grampian Transport Museum was a 1945 leyland hippo that didnt sell (reserve too high) a 1940 15 Cwt Morris compressor truck (heated bidding!) a number of champs in a very poor state, just twisted bodys, with exception of one with wheels and looked kind of in one piece and a dodge weapons carrier that had a botched cab at some stage and a bedford truck 1940's just a rotten cab and straight chassis. I personally am interested in the Humber 1 ton 4x4 though, if only i could catch the owner at home!! |
05 BK 61 was a FV1611 ie APC so it would have had a single speed dynamo & quite possibly a winch ie a FV1611B.
As a FV1601 chassis entered service 19/5/53 Engine No.6507 Struck off census 12/9/67 Sold at Ruddington 15/12/68 Sale No.94 Lot No.1337 for £60 Somewhere I have picture of it in MacGreggors yard circa 1985. The only in service pictures I have seen of pigs in Cyprus are just sand/stone in colour. I have seen straight from Cyprus Salidins in stone & green, but not a pig. They may have been multi-coloured but bear in mind owners do like to make there vehicles stripy at the slightest excuse. If this was an in-service camo scheme, the darker bits would be more focussed on the corners of the vehicle. The front wings may not be original as I can see no evidence of front lockers & also look at the asymmetry of the side lights. Given the part of the world you are in, I suspect I know who owns this pig. He has had a couple that I know of, so I'll e-mail him & find out if it is his & if it is for sale. Don't worry about the FV1621 Missile Supply Truck, as Richard says that was a soft skinned Humber. The parts list ammendments relate mainly to that plus other things that were forgotten from the original IPC such as speedo cable etc |
If its Doug, ive already spoken to him, and if i can catch him in one day i will be going up and purchasing said PIG!

Hi Paul
Wow another Champ driver, I do believe thats two of us now. Yipeee Cheers Rich. |
Wow, that looks like a good conversion to do, and if you run it on SVO you can run it on up to 2500 litres a year without paying fuel duty under recent excise legislation!!
Please post more pictures of that conversion as you get there, its pretty impressive. |
I TOOK THESE PICS ABOUT ABOUT SIX MONTHS AGO
SHE IS IN AND RUNNING SWEET NOW THE REAR AXLE WAS BROKE SO I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE OUT THE WORKSHOP AND TURN HER AROUND IN THE STREET ON FRONT AXLE SO I COULD TAKE THE REAR OUT AND REPLACE WITH ANOTHER WALTZ |

You can run older diesel vehicles on SVO or Straight Vegetable Oil, most people usually run a mix of 40% diesel to 60% vegetable oil (Oil Seed Rape is the best as it doesnt cloud at low temperatures).
The government got sick of trying to keep up with the administration of loads of 4x4 enthusiasts requesting excise paperwork (C&E Form 103) so they could run on Bio SVO and then pay the reduced rate of Bio fuel tax per litre on the SVO they used. So Customs and Excise made it legal to use SVO up to a quantity of 2500 litres a year for each individual vehicle. You can run on straight SVO, on smaller engined cars there is a problem with lift pumps being able to handle the viscosity, but a Cummins donk wouldnt think twice about it. Another way of ensuring the viscosity is kept "Runny" is to add between 2 and 5% white spirit to the SVO and let sit for a week, it breaks the chains within the vegetable oil and makes it more useable in colder weather, the only downside is white spirit isnt exempt from fuel tax, but who's gonna know!! Apparently the cheapest method of purchase is via a Vegetable oil distributor in 1000 Litre containers, although on the Mitsubishi shogun forum i am also on, people buy cheap 1 litre bottles on offer and bung it straight in their motor!. For those who are thinking "Thats going to bugger the engine" some owners have been running their vehicles for over 2 years doing high mileages solely on SVO and report a slight increase in performance (better Cetane values in SVO) quieter running, with no fouling problems. Some of these owners are using their vehicles under heavy towing loads etc. For military vehicles designed to run multifuel i shouldnt think SVO would be of any concern at all. The exhaust emissions are better as there is no mineral content in the fumes, just smells like you are cooking! |

hey lads
nice mk1 pig for sale on ebay Item number: 320160668740 |
he says on is advert that it runs on petrol and kerosene
do you know what that means |
He doesn't seem to know the engine capacity of a B60, but if it runs on kerosene, perhaps it isn't a B60 any more?
I have asked him for the military reg number. |

Just wanted to check on the vehicle's history. Feedback is not 100% fantastic. |

1. It shouldn't have two rear steps, only the Ambulance FV1613 had two. It should only have a single step on the off side. 2. It should only have 3 antenna mounts not 4. All pigs had 3 mounts, but FV1612 which were FFW, when converted to FFR had a 4th ant mounted on the rear off side corner. FV1611 were not made into FFR so only had 3 mounts. Incidentally when you examine a real FFR Pig the structure of the 4th mount is usually not as good as the other 3, as this was made in workshops rather than on manufacture. Otherwise looks quite nice. |
