Availability of new Captive Nuts
 

I am trying to replace damaged/broken captive nuts on my C8A. Can anyone advise whether/where I can obtain replacement captive nuts (the cage and nut)? Thanks.

That's getting a little personal, isn't it? I mean family forum an' all...

Spaenaur has (had) most styles listed in their catalogue. They are not always the cheapest, but the selection is good and many of their wares (things like weatherstrip, canvas goods, buckles, upholstery items, slot headed screws) are suitable for vintage vehicles. Their catalogue is available online in PDF format.

I'm presuming that if nothing like that were available over there, arrangements could be made to buy them here and transship, that is if the company wouldn't ship overseas.

I've used dozens of the 1/4"-20 Spaed & Nautered captive nuts (sorry Geoff, I'll behave now) on the Fox and have purchased several dozen more for the HUW. They are a perfect match and easy to use.

I don't have the part number handy to match with the one provided above but could if required.

Glad that they were able to be of help, good to know that they can handle sales out side of the US. Also good to know that the items arrived in a timely manor.

Now how are you going to weld them on? The reason ask is I have weld them on with both mig and pinch spot welder. Either way preparation of what you are welding them two is important. With the mig cleaning the surface of the part down to bare metal is more of an issue of appearance of the weld. With spot or pinch welder it is critically important have a clean smooth surface to spot weld the captive nut to. It is really annoying to have the darn things fall off or spin once everything is assembled. (Bin there done that) I taken to giving them a good tap with a hammer after welding to be sure that they are really welded on tight. Found that initially that I was also tending to not use enough heat when spot welding the light gage captive nut to heavy gage body work. You need to really turn up the power so that you are getting good penetration on the heavier steel.

Hi Phil,

I'm afraid I am no welder. I wouldn't know a mig weld from a Mig 15. However, I have discussed your message with the chap who is going to be fixing the nuts, and he says that he sees no problem with Mig welding them. He's a bit laconic, so didn't add much to that.
