I don't recall ever hearing any "war stories" regards Grandpa Joe having served at all, and gotten wounded, although I discovered he DID serve via Archivianet's attestation records. Grandpa Joe was married to (Granny Joe) Mary Ellen Viznaugh, first cousin to Archie and William

Rob:

WWI is not my amateur military forte, but only 5 Regiments fought at the Ridge out of what, 4 Divisions comprising the Canadian Corps? This seems to be a bit short of the total Regimental participation.

More research needed, at least on my part.

RHClarke 07-04-07 06:07

Short...

Jon,

I'll check this out. You may be correct as I just noticed that the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery is not on the list. The DND missive may have referred to those Infantry Regiments at Vimy that will have representation at the memorial on Monday...

I was SO HOPING to attend the cerimonies on Monday but alas, I have been forced into a job change. It certainly would not look good to my new employer if I were miss my second day on the job. Please if anyone is planning to attend, post an indepth description of the event.

Hi Folks,

I think my posts don't quite fit in this thread about the battle of Vimy, as my Viznaugh's were part of the Somme, not Vimy, although Archie IS listed on the Vimy memorial (he was MIA/KIA) and that's why I mentioned things. My grandfather, Joseph Smith CEF CMR (overseas) I have NO idea where he would have been nor how he was wounded. He didn't enlist until March 15, 1917 at age 34. He was a farmer ;)

I've been catching bits on TV about Vimy ... one bit I saw was the insides of the tunnels and heard about how quiet the soldiers had to be as the Germans were in tunnels close by as well and they could hear any noise. How cramped and uncomfortable everyone must have been ... and what horrible conditions all round in WW1, the trenches, the everything :(

Cdn. soldier receives proper burial at Vimy Ridge
Updated Sat. Apr. 7 2007 12:48 PM ET

Canadian Press

PAS-DE-CALAIS, France -- A young Canadian soldier who lost his life in the First World War battle of Vimy Ridge finally received a proper military burial on Saturday.

Pte. Herbert Peterson, his remains in a flag-draped coffin, was carried in solemn procession by Canadian soldiers through a large crowd gathered at La Chaudiere military cemetery.

Political and military officials, as well as former governor-general Adrienne Clarkson were among dignitaries on hand for the burial, which came almost 90 years after Peterson's death.

Peterson's remains were dug up about four years ago and identified through DNA testing.

After today's hour-long ceremony, Peterson's niece, Doreen Bargholz, and her husband each put a single poppy on the coffin.

"We're very, very proud of our uncle for doing the service at the time,'' she said. "He probably didn't have to do that, but he wanted to do that for his country.''

The ceremony is one of a number of events in France over the Easter weekend to mark the 90th anniversary of the battle of Vimy Ridge and rededication of the restored Vimy Memorial. The battle, which began April 9th, 1917, became one of Canada's most spectacular military victories.

Peterson, a 22-year-old from of Berry Creek, Alta., died during a trench raid against German forces near Vimy Ridge a few months later on June 8 or 9, 1917.

Peterson's was one of two bodies uncovered in 2003 by construction workers south of Avion, France, near the ridge.

Scraps of uniform, a cap badge and bits of ammunition and equipment identified the bodies as Canadians. DNA tests later confirmed his identity.

His unit had been involved in a night attack on German trenches involving about 3,000 Canadians. Investigators surmise Peterson had been badly wounded in his legs and his abdomen when a comrade came to his assistance and began carrying him back to the Canadian position.

Officials believe an artillery shell must have exploded overhead or nearby, killing both soldiers and driving their bodies into the dirt.

Peterson was a member of the 49th Battalion, Canadian Infantry, a unit that later evolved into the Loyal Edmonton Regiment.

Vimy Ridge

I have just arrived home from England this evening after a trip to France and Belgium for the Vimy celebrations. It was my second trip to the Vimy Monument and it looks ever so much better after all the restoration work that has been done on it.
It was amazing to watch the stream of Canadian high school students that came down the road to the grass in front of the monument for the ceremony and I'm sure they have never had a history course like their week in Europe.
Gord
