Strickland Bren Tractor

Hi Ron

I have a page here on these tractors... as well as a segment in the Carrier DVD.

Did you happen to get a hull no?

How much did it bring at the auction?

Hi All
Ada & I went to the clearance sale which was at Kaniva. We left 3.30am and returned home about 3pm. We left before it came under the hammer as there was so much crap there. I took a number of photographs and was going to post them but Rocket Ron beat me to the punch. It was sold for $3200 and I'm trying to track down the new owner at the moment.

The Hull Number has left me in a bit of a quandry. It was VR 417, but when I look at my database it appears that number was allocated to a 1941 SAR Carrier. I'm going to have to go back to my original source of this number.

Strickland carrier

Hello Bob,
Just found your post, I was going to post the other details but did not have time, I was going to bid on it but its too far from home if it had been a complete hull that would have been a different story, and it would have been in the shed right now,
Best Regards,
Ron,

Ryan 05-03-07 02:18

I was there too at the auction. I was one of the early bidders but as I was a long way from home I had to factor in transport costs. Like you say ron, if it had complete armour it would have been a different story. It ended up going to a phone bidder for $3200. I wonder if they knew it was a Strickland conversion?
I left soon after, did anyone get the price on the Chevy Blitz?

Strickland carrier

Hello Ryan.
I would have had to drag it all the way up the hill into Queensland, good point really it was only advertised as a Bren gun carrier as you know, nothing was said about the Strickland conversion so a phone bidder may or may not have been snared?

Ron,

Hmmm, 3 MLU members (at least, that's just the one's we know of!) went to an Auction of a Bren Carrier, and only tell us AFTER the fact?!?!
More people have owned up to fact they might be the father of Anna Nicole Smith's child than let people know this auction was on! :)

Pedr 05-03-07 13:25

We all thought that Lithgow was too far away anyway and that you wouldn't be interested Tony.

Joking....I knew but wasn't sure what was there.

Glad I didn't make the trip too now.

Pedr

Are you going to Corowa this year??

Re. Sneaky Petes

Hi Tim Tam
Due to factors beyond my control, i.e. immense problems getting into MLU combined with the short notice of this auction, I never had a chance to "heads up". It was only a last minute decision that we went to the sale. As it turned out it wasn't worth going to buy anything but Carrier research wise it was worth it as I captured the Hull Number.

Re. Anna Nicole Smith's baby I haven't put in a bid, I'm too busy to baby sit.

Ryan, PM me some contact details, it would have been nice to meet you, or maybe we did as I was conducting a few lectures on the Carrier on that day.

Sneaky Bob

Wiring.

This image is further proof that this is a converted Victorian one due to the presence of the round terminal box assembly. Information suggests these were not utilised in the South Australian Carriers.

Looks like part of the Strickland conversion was to utilise a different size one to slow the vehicle down to a usable tractor speed.

Note here, more support to my arguement about the early Carriers having the track oriented with their "tails to the rear".

More details.

That's all for this thread from me. I hope you enjoyed them.

I have images of the Blitzs that were at Kaniva but I'll post them in the Softskin Forum.

Gotta go now and carry on my Corowa preparations.

Keep smiling :D :D Bob

As an aside I spoke to a guy who had offered to buy this Carrier at least 20 if not more years ago. No was the reply, I'm going to shed it and restore it. It was then dragged into the scrub where it lay deteriorating until sold the other day. Never mind. Hopefully it will now be restored. Even if the new owner wasn't aware it was a Strickland it is still a rare and unique vehicle.

Are to do with running on Power Kerosine I think.

Thanks for the pics, Bob.

Thx bob for the great pics. Me being my normal self forgot the camera on the day!

I posted some of Bob's images of this conversion on a UK Land Rover Forum (with appropriate credits :rolleyes ) & someone replied that he understood someone in Oz was converting Centurions to drilling rigs, but couldn't find the Website.

Sounded interesting. Any info anyone?

Off the top of my head I would have thought Centurions would have been long gone, but who knows.

:confused :confused :confused

gjamo 07-03-07 03:05

Maybe we should start a new thread for this

Thanks Graeme. Interesting stuff.

Not sure if they do the conversions or are just the source for the donors.
Reading all that, reminded me I have a newspaper list advertisment of the Dept. of Supply (?) for the disposal of all the Meteor spares, Transmissions, Dynomometers, & a host of other Centurion stuff from years ago.

I must have been a closet Mil. enthusiast even then.

:yappy: :yappy: :yappy: :)

Hi Bob,
Great pics thanks for posting them,Stricklands were quite common in Victoria in the late 50s and early 60s, we didnt bother with them as there were plenty of complete original ones laying around

Ron,
