I think the truck may be a Mack NO or 'Super Mack' in which case the item on the front will be a Garwood 5 MB winch.

Produced 1943 to 1945 as prime movers for the 155mm

Pete, the official photo says it's a 7 1/2 ton Mack, S/M 6242. The back says it's " L 5559024" except THIS IS NOT LISTED! Demand S/M 6242 was for H 5589005 to 5589104 and 5837426 to 5837549, for ‘Tractors 6 x 6 Super Heavy’ . I assumed it was a NM because we have a photo of a crate with one in, NM "6x6 Prime Mover". However no Census Number just the US contracts W2425-QM-710 and W-670-ORD-3352.

Nice photo not seen that one before it is indeed a model NO2 6x6 heavy prime mover, looks like a fairly early model with the wooden body fitted. As Pete says a Garwood winch fitted on the front

May I ask if it is thought that this could be a rebuild, ex-USA, to 1 7.5 tonner given the L prefix? That brings me on to the NM crates...does anyone have Bart's Mack book please to advise which NM trucks were supplied to the UK under? The only one that I can find is S/M 2311 for Medium 6x6 Tractors.

According to the War Office Data Book, the NM5 6 ton 6x6, was supplied under Contract no. S.M.2311, it is described as Heavy Artillery Tractor ( or 6 ton load carrier).

S/M 2311 seems to be "it" then thanks! Which Mack engine did they have: does the book say, please?

Incidetnally I see from the pic in Dr Gregg' "EUROPE WW2" that the 6-tonner 6x6 was rebuilt without winch, but with longer body as a 10-tonner, and the photo on the page has "WVEE" indicating that it was trialled at Farnborough, and thus a WD vehicle.

Thanks Cliff. I have a load more not in the "book". I picked up some French contract orders from the British WD papers I obtained a few yars ago.

NM7 & NM8 were supplied under lendlease to Australian, Canadian & South African Forces as well as Britain but no S/M # is given

The War Office book shows this contract, SM6242 as a NO6 . Also, looking up the census number, 5559024 in Chilwell list is interesting;

H5558376 - H5559875 ex-USA Ford & Willys Car 5cwt 4x4

Now, jeeps were never in the H class, I wonder if this is a group of vehicles handed over by the USA, which could included jeeps.

The Mack could well have been designated L, because its use was not intended to be as a tractor (ie H). They were designed to tow the US 155mm gun.

Barts book does not list any S/M #s for the NO but they were supplied as Defence aid to several countries in 1943 & 1944.

A photo shows a NO6 ready for British Service with a note about the single headlight been located further forward then normal.

With the benefit of the Record Card: Model Mack NM5, 19-12-41
H 5215518-5216041; 5476128-5477050; H 5813958-5814636; H 6228812-6229067. Tractors Medium . It also states that trailers were being atached to two tractors H5476167 & 169 Conversion ?? Reynolds S.6343.

On tghe back it lists allocations ...it looks as though by 21st June 1945 some had been converted to 5/6-tonners.

The card quotes chassis #s NM8D 1301-2260. Looks as though they were shipped September 1943-March 1944 to "Crating", "Elbow", India" etc.

Census Numbers L 6287521-525 were "Lorry 6-ton 6 x 6".

I can understand that the NO was converted from a tractor at some stage to a 7 1/2 tonner as well.
